Lydia Salett Dudley is a jazz pianist, vocalist, composer, arranger, and educator born into a musical family in Cleveland, Ohio. Her mother played a pivotal role in nurturing her musical talents from an early age, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in music.
Now based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Lydia is the bandleader of Lydia Salett Dudley & Jazz Xpressions, an ensemble known for dynamic performances that blend tradition with contemporary jazz expression. She earned her graduate degree in Jazz Composition from North Carolina Central University, where a jazz appreciation course in 2011 ignited her passion for music education and community engagement.
Inspired to make music accessible to young people, Lydia founded The Salett Art Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing music enrichment opportunities for underserved youth. Through performance, education, and mentorship, she continues to inspire the next generation of musicians and artists.
Lydia has performed at numerous venues and special events throughout her career. Among her most cherished experiences was performing at the childhood home of Nina Simone in Tryon, North Carolina, shortly after the home was designated a National Treasure in 2018.
In 2021, Lydia received a prestigious grant from Chamber Music America through its program supporting female-led jazz ensembles. The award provided her the opportunity to study with Grammy-nominated vocalist Carmen Lundy, an experience that helped shape the artistic vision for her album Rise Up, released in October 2023.
In June 2024, Lydia joined Dr. Lenora Hammonds and the North Carolina Central University Jazz Ensemble in a performance at Carnegie Hall, marking another significant milestone in her career.
Most recently, Lydia's arrangement of Nina Simone's powerful anthem "Mississippi Goddam" was selected by Charlie Young and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra for its Songs of Freedom concert during the 2026 Juneteenth celebration, recognizing her skill as both an arranger and interpreter of historically significant music.
During her graduate studies, Lydia devoted extensive research to the music of jazz pioneer Mary Lou Williams and had the honor of performing several of Williams' compositions at the renowned musician's former Catholic church, deepening her connection to one of jazz's most influential composers.
Whether performing on stage, composing original works, arranging classic repertoire, or educating young musicians, Lydia Salett Dudley remains committed to preserving the rich legacy of jazz while creating meaningful opportunities for future generations.
